Environmental Initiatives
Through our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), we strive to deliver broader societal and environmental value. We have chosen to focus on 16 priority SDGs. However, throughout this report, we use corresponding icons to indicate where our activities contribute directly to these and other targets. Our dedication to these goals reflects our holistic value creation and preservation approach. By integrating ESG considerations into every business aspect, we aim to safeguard the interests of the societies we serve from potential value erosion. In doing so, we deepen our commitment to and augment our influence on the UN SDGs we have identified.
Corporate Social Initiatives
Socio-economic development (SED) is central to City Lodge Hotels' ethos, reflecting our commitment to responsible business and community welfare. Our SED initiatives go beyond philanthropy, serving as strategic investments that enhance quality of life, foster sustainability, and build strong stakeholder relationships. Aligned with our business goals, these efforts create shared value for communities and our long-term interests. We run extensive corporate social responsibility programmes, with national initiatives and regional projects led by hotel general managers to support local communities.
Our Sustainability
Sustainability lies at the very heart of how we do business.
Sustainability lies at the very heart of how we do business. Our commitment to sustainability and impact means integrating social, ethical and environmental considerations into our day-to-day operations. A key element of this is solid corporate governance that ensures sustainable management with a long-term vision. We recognise the global challenges that are impacting businesses and fundamentally changing how businesses like ours operate. In this context, we are committed to pursuing sustainable growth that ensures the greatest social and economic profitability and public support, and the lowest environmental impact. The Value Reporting Foundation (VRF) offers a comprehensive suite of resources designed to help businesses and investors develop a shared understanding of enterprise value and how it is created, preserved, or eroded over time. We monitor and report our performance against the six capitals outlined by the VRF’s International Framework, namely:
Trends shaping our sustainability approach
On World Environmental Day, 5 June 2024, we highlighted our sustainability initiatives and brought critical environmental issues to our stakeholders' attention. By raising awareness, we showcased our commitment to environmental stewardship through actions like reducing energy consumption, minimising waste, and implementing water conservation measures across our properties. These initiatives reflect our dedication to preserving natural resources and encourage stakeholders to join us, reinforcing our collective responsibility for a sustainable future. Moving forward, we remain focused on reducing energy consumption per room sold, upskilling our personnel, and leveraging technology for data-driven, sustainable decisions. We aim to enhance waste management by improving recycling, reducing waste, and exploring better ways to manage non-hazardous and plastic waste. Refreshed campaigns will also encourage guest participation in sustainability practices, fostering a collaborative approach.
Transformation, diversity, and inclusion
Since the group’s inception, we have ensured no salary disparity based on race, gender, or age, reflecting our belief in equal opportunities and advancing women’s roles in our business and the hotel industry. Currently, 45% of our Board and over 35% of our executive committee are women, figures we aim to increase. We continually monitor transformation pillars: ownership, management control, skills development, ESG, and socio-economic development.
Water conservation
Given the need to conserve water in water-scarce southern Africa, we prioritise water efficiency through staff and guest collaboration, including initiatives to reduce consumption without affecting the guest experience, such as reducing rooms with baths to 60% and installing low-flow showerheads and taps. Currently, 20 hotels have boreholes (12 with filtration systems), 34 have water storage facilities, and we actively manage water quality.
Animal welfare
We committed to serving only 100% cage-free eggs across all operations by 2025, partnering with Humane Society International-Africa (HSI-Africa) in this endeavour. Currently, we serve over 2 million eggs annually, of which 86% (2023: 65%) are cage-free group-wide. Across our South African operations, 92% of our eggs are cage-free. Our sustainability committee is also actively pursuing ethical options for sourcing other foods on our menus.
Waste management
Guided by our commitment to responsible environmental practices and compliance with the Waste Management Act (2013), we vigorously investigate methods to eliminate food waste to landfills. Our focus remains firmly on accelerating waste management initiatives, reflecting our enduring commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Energy management
Our ongoing energy-efficiency initiatives are supported by daily monitoring at each hotel, where environmental committees and champions play crucial roles, tracking and reviewing energy consumption data. Energy use is optimised and anomalies or deviations from usual patterns are quickly identified and addressed. This structured approach maintains consistent energy performance and fosters a culture of sustainability and collective responsibility.
