From its humble beginnings with the visionary launch of City Lodge Randburg (now City Lodge Hotel Bryanston) on 1 August 1985, City Lodge Hotels has grown to become one of South Africa's leading hotel chains. Founded by Swiss-born Hans Enderle, this inaugural property laid the foundation for a commitment to quality accommodation, a welcoming ambience, and friendly, efficient service – principles that remain the cornerstone of the group's success today.
Pioneering the quality, selected services hotel concept in South Africa, the group formally incorporated in July 1986, embarking on a journey of substantial growth and strategic diversification to cater to the evolving needs of modern travellers. This expansion saw the introduction of the highly successful second-tier Town Lodge concept in 1990, followed by a significant milestone with the group's successful listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 18 November 1992.
Further solidifying its position in the market, City Lodge Hotels strategically acquired a 50% interest in the upmarket Courtyard Hotel chain in 1995, the same year that marked the launch of Road Lodge, a brand specifically designed for the budget-conscious traveller. Demonstrating its long-term commitment to this premium segment, the group acquired the remaining 50% of the Courtyard Joint Venture in 2015.
The group's dedication to its employees was underscored on its 10th anniversary, 1 August 1995, with the launch of the City Lodge 10th Anniversary Employees Share Trust, empowering all staff members to become stakeholders in the company's continued success.
Today, City Lodge Hotels boasts a significant portfolio of 7478 rooms across its four distinct brands: 5 Courtyard Hotels (472 rooms), 18 City Lodge Hotels (3226 rooms), 12 Town Lodges (1507 rooms), and 23 Road Lodges (2273 rooms). This scale positions the group amongst the top 250 largest hotel chains globally.
